Vessel arrests did happen earlier in the autumn (or even in August (or even earlier than that))

2018-11-27 12:07:24 UTC

The only difference this time around is that the border security says Ukrainian ship didn't respond to communication, so they did what border security does

2018-11-27 12:08:31 UTC

There's still that same legal argument over borders that's been there since 2014, but you can get why they're so touchy about Kerch in particular, as the bridge is there

2018-11-27 12:09:10 UTC

The massive amount of coverage of this particular incident sure is surprising though, as is the martial law

Russia started earlier this month to harass foreign and Ukrainian vessels in the Asovian Sea. They searched them and held them in customs procedure for up to 3 days. Which is not illegal per se (only an asshole move), but Ukraine actively claims Crimea and it happened in Crimean ports, sooo.... Ukraine started to intern Russian fishing vessels sailing in ports and waters the Ukraine claims without Ukrainian approval. In retaliation Russia did the same vice versa.
In response Ukraine beefed up its military capabilities in the ports it controls at the Asovian Sea. Which now was forcefully prevented by Russia. And here we are today. Russia now probably tries to annex the sea and subsequently the Ukrainian ports there. Hence why Ukraine went to red alert.
The Russian version goes differently, of course. They claim its all an international plot to justify new sanctions against mother Russia. Everything Russia did was legal, they claim.

Russian naval power is not really a concern to the west, but Russian land power is pretty overwhelming to the Ukrainians. They're fucked if the Russians decide to invade. They don't have the manpower, equipment, or training to hold off the Russians for long, and I don't think there's any political will in the west to intervene. The Euros aren't going to want to get their natural gas cut off in winter (putting aside the fact that they can't do jack shit against Russia anyway), and Trump sure as hell doesn't want to start a war with Russia over some far-flung impoverished territory that he probably can't point to on a map.

2018-11-27 15:30:35 UTC

There's no profit in it.

2018-11-27 15:41:14 UTC

I really hate Russia right now.

2018-11-27 15:43:36 UTC

Lol

2018-11-27 15:48:43 UTC

When Russia inevitably collapses from its shit economy, I can’t wait to see all the neighbors it has fucked over move in to retake territory stolen from them like scavengers to a carcass.

“ Manafort held secret talks with Assange in Ecuadorian embassy, sources say”
By Luke Harding and Dan Collyns

The Guardian claims that Manafort met three times with Assange in London for unknown reasons. They attempt to link it to the DNC leaks. Wikileaks denies this. It’s important to note that Wikileaks has an impeccable reputation for honesty as a publisher. The Guardian does not. They also used an anonymous source, so these claims should be met with skepticism.

2018-11-27 16:21:29 UTC

Welp, guess it's going to be 'muh Russia' all the way to 2024. Or global nuclear holocaust, whatever comes first.

2018-11-27 16:21:42 UTC

I swear to god they're not going to stop until we're all radioactive ash.

2018-11-27 16:21:58 UTC

They want war so fucking bad.

2018-11-27 16:22:49 UTC

For the record, I hate Russia even though I also think the Democrats need to lay off the conspiracy theories.

"Google has banned expletives and racial slurs from its predictive technologies, as well as mentions of its business rivals or tragic events."

I smell...antitrust.

2018-11-27 16:22:54 UTC

Assange would already have been JDAM'd by now had Hillary won.

2018-11-27 16:37:35 UTC

Yeah, finding something to criticize Russia isn’t exactly hard, but the conspiracy theories are out of control.

2018-11-27 16:44:36 UTC

Wew fucking lad that's bad.

2018-11-27 16:54:35 UTC

Obama did something like this on his way out.

2018-11-27 17:05:19 UTC

What’s interesting is the media has criticized Hungary for putting government money into its media. Claiming it killed their free press. Who wants to bet that the left will react differently to what’s happening in Canada?

"The bipartisan bill, which was introduced by Senators Portman and Murphy in March, will improve the ability of the United States to counter foreign propaganda and disinformation from our enemies by establishing an interagency center housed at the State Department to coordinate and synchronize counter-propaganda efforts throughout the U.S. government."

2018-11-27 17:35:57 UTC

i guess thats the source for most of these "anonymous" sources

2018-11-27 17:38:30 UTC

No way to know. We don’t even know who’s getting the money. It’s all secret, so you could turn on CNN or read a NYT article that’s straight up government propaganda and you wouldn’t know.

2018-11-27 17:39:55 UTC

considering these "anonymous" sources tend to drop "bomshells" at convient times related to specific political events, i'd wager its this interagancy department

"the legislation seeks to leverage expertise from outside government to create more adaptive and responsive U.S. strategy options. The legislation establishes a fund to help train local journalists and provide grants and contracts to NGOs, civil society organizations, think tanks, private sector companies, media organizations, and other experts outside the U.S. government with experience in identifying and analyzing the latest trends in foreign government disinformation techniques. This fund will complement and support the Center’s role by integrating capabilities and expertise available outside the U.S. government into the strategy-making process. It will also empower a decentralized network of private sector experts and integrate their expertise into the strategy-making process."
