No they weren't.
Nurses, not medics
Medics serve with the troops in the fighting
Nurses serve in the rear, in hospitals and triage sites
Okay, fine. Wrong word...
If you're not a native English speaker, you're forgiven 😃
In any case, there are women medics and corpsmen now, which I personally think is fine
No one thinks that women soldiers are a problem
what is a problem is when exceptions are made and they're given a special set of rules to qualify by
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palmach
30% of the Palmach were female
No, I think women soldiers are a problem because it places an unnecessary burden on the military and squanders money. Sexual dimorphism is a bitch. Women suffer more lower body joint injuries and will end up getting more medical discharges. That costs money. Gotta pay a medical pension and train a replacement.
For occupations where sheer physical strength and durability aren't important, there's no major impediment.
Other than pregnancy, which can be easily prevented.
But being a grunt in a modern first-world military is hard. There's too much shit to carry and you have to be able to keep up with and win against third-world dickheads running around in manjams carrying only an AK.
Having some women combat ready can be useful, especially in the case you describe. Women can reliably pass for women. They also can help present a softer face to a populace that aren't religious zealots.
But I agree they should have to meet the same standards as men to be infantry
But there are a lot of front line roles that aren't infantry. Cavalry, for instance. Small size/stature is a win for tank crews.
Except when it comes to breaking track.
Oh, I know.
And rarely are you in a nice parking lot when doing that. It's more of a bitch in a muddy field in a driving rain.
That's what tools are for. And skill. When dealing with equipment weighing dozens of tons, the difference in strength between man and woman pales.
Case in point the US army ranger course
Women got multiple tries on the field portions of the course
Normally if you fail any part of the course once thats it for you
No do overs, come back next year
and for every try, there was one less spot on the course for a male candidate.
You'll have to run more courses to get the same number of trained personnel. Cost increases.
Besides having mixed gender frontline infantry makes logistical and personnel management indefinetly more complicated then gender segregated units
If it means getting the best candidates, then a customer increase may make sense
Send the women in first because the whole ladies first thing. It’s only fair.
Everyone should read Days of Rage or a good review of it. Change my mind.
it's in the queue
Do it.
Or find a good review.
