He/she was a transgender activist who was running for some office and then was called out for it.

I would say create a culture that places importance on filing complaints immediately, and treats the situation with the severity and respect it deserves. That doesn't mean witchhunt tho

2018-11-23 21:01:55 UTC

No this person is not famous

2018-11-23 21:02:17 UTC

Well, with bill C-51 in Canada, they are actually going to require the defense to disclose their evidence beforehand.

2018-11-23 21:02:23 UTC

Just an awful person whom I no longer speak to outside of accidents

2018-11-23 21:02:28 UTC

I think John the Other covered that.

2018-11-23 21:02:43 UTC

That means that Jian Ghomeshi would be in prison now.

2018-11-23 21:02:55 UTC

If he had been tried with that law in effect.

2018-11-23 21:03:18 UTC

Really it's sickening how rape has been weaponized

2018-11-23 21:04:27 UTC

Feminist/victim organizations are trying to make it illegal to present some types of exculpatory evidence in court.

2018-11-23 21:04:56 UTC

Of course they are it is about power not justice

2018-11-23 21:05:04 UTC

I can only speak to the two cases I have dealt with in grand jury, both of which we sent to trial on a 7/0 vote including 3 men and 4 women.

2018-11-23 21:05:28 UTC

One was a 17yo who allegedly forced sex on a 14yo.

2018-11-23 21:05:30 UTC

Yes, the bar for a grand jury is pretty low.

2018-11-23 21:05:39 UTC

As they say, you can indict a cheese sandwich.

2018-11-23 21:05:44 UTC

They other was a serial pedophile.

2018-11-23 21:05:53 UTC

Guilty beyond a reasonable doubt is ignored many times these days

2018-11-23 21:05:59 UTC

My issue is not with grand juries.

2018-11-23 21:06:14 UTC

By pedophile, the victims were all 14-17

2018-11-23 21:06:20 UTC

My issue is with the presumption of guilt

2018-11-23 21:06:27 UTC

Yes, mine too.

2018-11-23 21:07:09 UTC

I presume innocence but then review the facts presented and make the best decision i can

2018-11-23 21:07:17 UTC

Yes if that person is a pedophile they should absolutely be behind bars, but I need to assume they are innocent until proven guilty no matter how heinous the crime

2018-11-23 21:07:26 UTC

We've interrogated the police investigators pretty hard

2018-11-23 21:07:29 UTC

Many people do not

2018-11-23 21:07:52 UTC

How did you interrogate the police investigators as part of a grand jury?

2018-11-23 21:08:30 UTC

We are an investigative body. We can question the witnesses brought before us.

2018-11-23 21:08:39 UTC

Directly

2018-11-23 21:08:48 UTC

It's pretty empowering

2018-11-23 21:09:26 UTC

I was pretty ruthless with the detectives on the pedophile case because the girls looked pretty old and I wanted to fully understand what the accused knew of their ages

2018-11-23 21:09:43 UTC

When I was presented with evidence that he was picking them up at school, I was satisfied

2018-11-23 21:09:58 UTC

Makes sense.

2018-11-23 21:11:02 UTC

Likewise, two guys were ruthless on the detective on the 17yo rape case. They demanded the entire text conversation be read to us where he essentially admitted to doing it. They weren't satisfied with just the victim's testimony under oath.

2018-11-23 21:11:36 UTC

I really, really hope that people do continue taking this seriously,

2018-11-23 21:11:48 UTC

The "believe the victim" narrative is vomit inducing to me.

2018-11-23 21:12:04 UTC

The entire language is centered around manipulation, i.e. implying that there is a victim even.

2018-11-23 21:12:16 UTC

It presupposes, linguistically, what is to be proven.

2018-11-23 21:12:19 UTC

I detest that.
