5+ years was not a requirement then

go to school for most of the recession because i was lucky, get out and suddenly you need 5+ years

got lucky with a paid internship that turned into a full time job after a year

also H1B usually requires a sponsor and a job earning like 80k. which there was not many to begin with, and you'd have no problem finding people in the US to fill that. outside of maybe doctors which take like 8+ years to train a new one and if you need one you need one like now.
