Ugly kids?

2018-07-26 06:05:23 UTC [Subverse #general]

Well he can put "no u".

2018-07-26 06:07:22 UTC [Subverse #general]

The above link is the girl Polanski "raped" giving her account.

2018-07-26 06:10:01 UTC [Subverse #general]

I love that phrase hawt diggity dawg

2018-07-26 06:11:15 UTC [Subverse #general]

Sex bots will be total sluts. They'll get slut-shamed.

2018-07-26 06:11:35 UTC [Subverse #general]

LGBTQMGTOW

2018-07-26 06:17:20 UTC [Subverse #general]

I only rarely agree with Guardian opinion pieces. They deliberately seek out extreme opinion for clickbait.

2018-07-26 06:19:56 UTC [Subverse #general]

Early disagreement with it. It's not just a right wing thing. I'm a centre left social democrat and fully believe there's an anti-Enlightenment insurgency coming out of critical theory in academia.

2018-07-26 06:30:29 UTC [Subverse #general]

Skim read it and I disagreed with the whole thing bar the criticisms of US right wingers. Eg. Nonsense like the coupling of free speech and free markets which in reality are entirely unrelated concepts.

His thesis is that there is no problem with academia and rather what's happening is that conservatives are panicking about a reduction in their voter numbers so inventing a moral panic. Well he must've been living under a rock the last decade because we've had a conservative government since 2010 and a Brexit movement largely spearheaded by right wing sentiment. Conservatives are not panicking about their voter numbers.

2018-07-26 06:32:34 UTC [Subverse #general]

It was really obviously dishonest. He knows he's trying to invert reality. The true moral panic is coming from the very postcolonialists and feminists he was defending in that piece.

2018-07-26 06:37:53 UTC [Subverse #general]

The "science wars" is a thing. A really good Youtube channel detailing the arguments is King Crocoduck.

2018-07-26 06:39:47 UTC [Subverse #general]

Basically postmodern critical theorists demanding that western science be ripped up because it's sexist and racist.

2018-07-26 06:41:55 UTC [Subverse #general]

The good news is that this nonsense is worst in the Anglophone world. Somewhere like France is far better at ignoring its critical theorists and postmodernism is unpopular there (ironic, given French intellectuals played a huge role in its creation).

2018-07-26 06:45:50 UTC [Subverse #general]

@Deleted User Exactly. That's postmodernism mixed with postcolonialism (the academic field). Postmodernism or more specifically poststructuralism is, as the name suggests, about deconstructing everything. ie. Tearing everything down (because it's all racist and sexist). Postcolonialism is a branch of critical theory coming up with babble about how and why the western world and everything emanating from it is racist.

That "science must fall" case was your perfect example.

2018-07-26 06:48:48 UTC [Subverse #general]

Wakanda is a fascist state! Really. Autocratic rule. Militarized population. Strong emphasis on "the nation". Isolationism. No foreign trading or immigration. And Wakanda will've had to have colonised land to have created itself.

2018-07-26 06:49:42 UTC [Subverse #general]

Proto-fascist then

2018-07-26 06:50:30 UTC [Subverse #general]

UK isnt fascist, fingers crossed we'll get there though ๐Ÿ˜

2018-07-26 06:51:42 UTC [Subverse #general]

Ah ok. I havent read the comics. I'll take your word for it, thanks for the correction. I think what we still could say though is that the SJW love for Wakanda makes them hypocrites.

2018-07-26 06:53:55 UTC [Subverse #general]

Oh really? Shit, I'd only read reviews of the Black Panther film (I didnt even see it) and I got quite a misinforned view of Wakanda then.

2018-07-26 06:56:04 UTC [Subverse #general]

Cool. Wish I was into comics and stuff but it passed me by growing up. I have friends who talk about their love for Marvel and I have nothing to contribute to the conversation sadly.

2018-07-26 06:56:42 UTC [Subverse #general]

Ha! Nice ๐Ÿ˜„

2018-07-26 06:57:50 UTC [Subverse #general]

Cool, is it online or something you got to buy?

2018-07-26 07:00:37 UTC [Subverse #general]

I know what you mean, I'll keep an eye out!

I was too fucking hyperactive as a kid so I spent all my time playing football and stuff like that. Wish I was more into more sort of artistic stuff, which I include comics under. Even video games I know nothing about. I'm too restless for them even! ๐Ÿ˜†

2018-07-26 07:03:18 UTC [Subverse #general]

That's why you like your Serbian films then! You started young!

2018-07-26 07:04:04 UTC [Subverse #general]

My friend (the one of Pakistani parents I keep mentioning) adores the Sherlock Holmes books.

2018-07-26 07:04:40 UTC [Subverse #general]

Hahaha! Big Benedict!

2018-07-26 07:06:26 UTC [Subverse #general]

I love the loyalty of sidekick characters like Watson. We all wish we had a Watson to rely on.

2018-07-26 07:07:45 UTC [Subverse #general]

Ah, well as usual, I haven't read anything. So Watson was more innocent then than Holmes?

2018-07-26 07:08:09 UTC [Subverse #general]

Ah ok, yeah.

2018-07-26 07:10:34 UTC [Subverse #general]

I like that dynamic in stories too, where a relationship is unequal. That's how pretty much every human relationship is. Then we realise our relationships aren't perfectly mutual which can cause insecurities and sometimes poor decisions from those insecurities.

2018-07-26 07:11:23 UTC [Subverse #general]

Yeah, I've no doubt the writer of House was inspired by Sherlock (among many other characters from literary history).

2018-07-26 07:12:36 UTC [Subverse #general]

Hahaha! Shit, you could be right! That's probably not just a coincidence.

2018-07-26 07:14:56 UTC [Subverse #general]

He was from Edinburgh, Conan Doyle, same city I'm in right now. Apparently he based Sherlock on a real life doctor acquaintance.

2018-07-26 07:16:10 UTC [Subverse #general]

@Deleted User You're right, btw. I'd never noticed the connection before.

2018-07-26 07:16:43 UTC [Subverse #general]

"Dr. Gregory House was based on Sherlock Holmes... but Holmes, in turn, was based on a Doctor that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle knew while studying medicine, Dr. Joseph Bell, whose specialty was diagnosis".

2018-07-26 07:19:54 UTC [Subverse #general]

Kinky.

2018-07-26 07:21:11 UTC [Subverse #general]

A bit Indiana Jonesish

2018-07-26 07:34:36 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

Twitter is becoming ever more ideologically narrow. This is no surprise and has been happening since early into Twitter's existence. It's effectively a platform for activists and journalists. Us plebs are just there to make up the numbers then the celebrities on it bring in the cash to Twitter.

(That's for English Twitter. Apparently Arabic Twitter is an Islamist shitshow and I've no idea what the political current is in other languages on Twitter).

2018-07-26 07:41:46 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

It's clear that the decision makers at Twitter view #BlackLivesMatter and #MeToo as positive forces unleashed onto society via Twitter. Most of the rest of us likely disagree, I certainly do. I suspect that Twitter believe they're serving a moral purpose now and will want to increasingly gear Twitter towards facilitating such "progressive" hashtag movements. Eliminating the dissent on the platform such activists face (from "trolls", as dissenters are called) is no doubt something Twitter is trying to do. Reducing the conservative presence on the website is a way of doing that.

2018-07-26 07:42:49 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

The hashtag movements drive huge amounts of traffic to Twitter, so more money is made, making the shareholders happy too. Progressives utilising capitalism, somewhat ironically.

2018-07-26 07:45:04 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

No?

2018-07-26 07:47:00 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

Ok I just googled it. Scary stuff. I'm not on Twitter and quite glad. It has been ruined nowadays. It was fun back when it started. Tweeting abuse at random celebrities ๐Ÿ˜

2018-07-26 07:50:39 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

Something people have too easily forgotten about Twitter is that ISIS greatly benefitted from using Twitter until they were belatedly cracked down on. It was mainly on Arabic Twitter so western and anglophone media didn't pick up on it for about two full years before finally putting pressure on Twitter to stop it. Twitter was ISIS's main media platform for literally years. Yet Twitter feels no shame over that.

2018-07-26 07:54:19 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

I laugh at how Facebook gets pilloried for providing a supposedly influential platform for a candidate (Trump) in a democratic election. Twitter provided a platform for the preaching of genocide against Yazidis, mass rape and slaughter, brutal theocracy and all the other shit ISIS did. But that was cool. No biggie. Twitter good. Facebook bad.

2018-07-26 07:55:49 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

Not defending Facebook. Just pointing out how easy a ride Twitter is given by comparison.

2018-07-26 07:58:06 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

Yeah. Beat them at their own game. Just start yelling "racist Nazis" at Twitter until it sticks.

2018-07-26 07:58:56 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

Jack is a white man. Shouldn't be that hard to get them to turn on him!

2018-07-26 08:07:41 UTC [Subverse #general]

If environmentalists are ever annoying you, just remind them their movement was started by the Nazis. Shuts them up every time.

https://www.haaretz.com/jewish/of-nazis-and-other-nature-lovers-1.5236743

2018-07-26 08:09:58 UTC [Subverse #general]

Sure. Which makes it all the harder for annoying environmentalists to argue against!

2018-07-26 08:10:37 UTC [Subverse #general]

It'll induce some great cognitive dissonance in them.

2018-07-26 09:03:32 UTC [Subverse #general]

@Uksio It's actually an even worse headline than that. The distancing quotes put around fans insinuates that those with the wrong opinions aren't *true* video game fans.

2018-07-26 09:17:23 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

Hugo Chavez's daughter is worth $4 billion. What a "man of the people he was", pillaging their collective wealth and leaving them destitute.

2018-07-26 12:32:29 UTC [Subverse #general]

There was no heat in Indian curry until the Portuguese brought chillies over from South America. I only learned that recently.

2018-07-26 12:36:49 UTC [Subverse #general]

@zutt So this will be framed as evidence of mounting authoritarianism in Israel. I'd argue that it doesn't show that as the government had nothing to do with it. What it does show is a more radicalised public. Netanyahu's reign has definitely emboldened the hard right in Israel. Once they're allowed out their cage they can have a contagious effect and a nasty form of nationalism can take root in a section of the public.

2018-07-26 12:38:03 UTC [Subverse #general]

It's those intolerant nationalists who've created the outrage here. The magazine are cowards though.

2018-07-26 12:41:15 UTC [Subverse #general]

Yeah I always make that point. It's little wonder we're now seeing outrage mobs being orchestrated by the far right when the far left have done it for years now and shown it to work.

2018-07-26 12:42:37 UTC [Subverse #general]

Sure, I was meaning that there'll be people with an agenda trying to portray this as evidence of Israel having slipped into some authoritarian dictatorship.

2018-07-26 12:44:12 UTC [Subverse #general]

The antisemitism accusation is dishonest. They were just butthurt that Netanyahu and his recent policy were being criticised.

2018-07-26 12:45:22 UTC [Subverse #general]

Yup!

2018-07-26 12:49:38 UTC [Subverse #general]

I find that populism always has a corrosive effect on social relations even if democracy and state appatatus itself aren't altered. So ErdoฤŸan in Turkey is an example of both. He has ripped up all the institutions and reformed them to his preference. He has also created a social civil war between Islamists and secularists.

But you get Corbyn in UK who if elected I doubt would actually damage democracy or toy with UK institutions. However, his populust rhetoric about "the people" and "the elites" would create huge social divisions. @zutt

2018-07-26 12:52:51 UTC [Subverse #general]

@zutt D'you live in UK, btw? (I know you're Czech).

2018-07-26 12:53:32 UTC [Subverse #general]

Ah cool. I wondered how your knowledge on the political scene here was so good. I'm UK too. Up in Scotland.

2018-07-26 12:55:24 UTC [Subverse #general]

UKIP don't attract many votes. They've gone up slightly in polls recently but I wouldn't bet on them being much of a force by the time of the next election.

2018-07-26 12:57:38 UTC [Subverse #general]

Lib Dems have had the same boost as UKIP according to recent polls. Lid Dems new voters are probably anti-Brexit people leaving Labour due to Corbyn's hard brexitism.

2018-07-26 12:58:29 UTC [Subverse #general]

Whereas the new UKIP voters are former Tory voters wanting a harder Brexit than Theresa May is offering.

2018-07-26 12:58:44 UTC [Subverse #general]

Like you said, doc.

2018-07-26 12:59:32 UTC [Subverse #general]

Jaymond Z.

2018-07-26 12:59:42 UTC [Subverse #general]

Jayremy

2018-07-26 13:00:56 UTC [Subverse #general]

@zutt Exactly.

2018-07-26 13:02:51 UTC [Subverse #general]

We had a referendum in Scotland in 2014 about leaving the UK. There was a white paper produced for that, ie. a plan was presented of what Scottish independence would look like. So voters knew what they were voting for.

The Brexit referendum had nothing like that.

2018-07-26 13:04:09 UTC [Subverse #general]

lol wut? EU is effectively the only economic block that matters along with China and USA. Which pile are they bottom of?

2018-07-26 13:05:13 UTC [Subverse #general]

Putin? Niceness? He shot down a passenger plane full of your countrymen. You forgotten that?

2018-07-26 13:05:54 UTC [Subverse #general]

Trump hates the EU because its competition for USA.

2018-07-26 13:06:45 UTC [Subverse #general]

Putin is a fucking arsehole. He was trying to scupper the recent Greece - Macedonia agreement.

2018-07-26 13:08:08 UTC [Subverse #general]

Blood? We're not the ones bombing the shit out of Syrian civilians and backing the thugs in Donbass.

2018-07-26 13:08:29 UTC [Subverse #general]

That's true. But you're way too soft on Russia.

2018-07-26 13:09:10 UTC [Subverse #general]

Putin backed Omar al-Bashir during his atrocities in Darfur. Russia get up to loads of shit.

2018-07-26 13:10:24 UTC [Subverse #general]

EU didn't invade Iraq though. Only UK and Spain I think. Or Denmark too. Can't remember.

2018-07-26 13:12:10 UTC [Subverse #general]

Except for the Kurds in northern Iraq. At least someone benefitted.

2018-07-26 13:13:17 UTC [Subverse #general]

Toppling dictators in the belief liberal democracy will blossom in the wake. Nice idea. Turned out to be disastrous in practice (Iraq, Libya).

2018-07-26 13:14:54 UTC [Subverse #general]

Sarkozy was huge on Libya.

2018-07-26 13:15:10 UTC [Subverse #general]

He was really adamant on it.

2018-07-26 13:16:50 UTC [Subverse #general]

@Dr.Wol Yeah. Only thing I'd say though is that Germany pays for that gas. So its not like Putin does it out of charity. Germany has opposed US-suggested sanctions on Russia because of the gas dependency.

2018-07-26 13:18:40 UTC [Subverse #general]

It would hurt Russia to stop selling their gas to Germany. I'm not understanding your meaning.

2018-07-26 13:21:50 UTC [Subverse #general]

How is Europe not playing ball with America?

2018-07-26 13:23:50 UTC [Subverse #general]

Ok. I dont understand why Trump has gone to war with his allies though. In a decade's time, China will've become the world's leading economy. By dividing the west against itself, Trump is only benefitting China.

2018-07-26 13:26:43 UTC [Subverse #general]
