But why is it that trans people are the only ones for whom chromosomes are the sole determining factor of social gender?

Though a bit rare, there are people with abnormal chromosomes.

Sometimes, babies are born intersex.

Sometimes, babies are born with XY chromosomes, but a female phenotype.

Etc.

Again, just playing devil's advocate here.

People are born with those chromosomes.

Maybe it's just a lack of awareness.

But I've never seen people look at those people with abnormal chromosomes and deny that they're the gender they were raised as.

Hermaphroditism, in creatures where it is the norm, means that there are no separate genders; any creature can mate with any other creature.
