2017-09-12 02:11:01 UTC

you act like the belief in "fairy tales" is a detrimental thing for human development

2017-09-12 02:11:20 UTC

atheism has no tradition

2017-09-12 02:12:11 UTC

Well, here's why. Sure, religion keeps you from existential crisis, but it also keeps you irrational. If you want humans to develop they have to be rational, and this is incompatible with religion without being schizophrenic.

2017-09-12 02:13:01 UTC

It doesn't keep you irrational at all, where do you get this

2017-09-12 02:13:10 UTC

Innovations is haulted by intellectual luddites called 'devout religious people'.

2017-09-12 02:13:28 UTC

If you believe in God, you believe it has rational basis.

2017-09-12 02:13:37 UTC

to describe religion as oppressive you'd logically apply the same to all human culture

2017-09-12 02:13:39 UTC

You believe that God has explanatory power.

2017-09-12 02:13:55 UTC

You believe that God causes you to travel into the afterlife.

2017-09-12 02:14:24 UTC

It is no co-incidence that society has been moving into a secular post-cultural mode.

2017-09-12 02:14:24 UTC

The vast masses of people dont need to be rational in the scientific sense

2017-09-12 02:14:41 UTC

The masses are not naturally atheistic

2017-09-12 02:14:51 UTC

Yeah, the masses of people don't need to be, but regardless religion is still irrational

2017-09-12 02:15:07 UTC

It's broken down to having zero evidence, and purely being based upon "faith"

2017-09-12 02:15:29 UTC

What doesn't have evidence?

2017-09-12 02:15:48 UTC

God, afterlife, the whole bit...

2017-09-12 02:16:09 UTC

Theism?

2017-09-12 02:16:23 UTC

I think theism is the result of psychological evolution

2017-09-12 02:16:30 UTC

Sure.

2017-09-12 02:16:47 UTC

basically the amalgamation of the truest of all values

2017-09-12 02:16:57 UTC

humans have a tendency towards hierarchy

2017-09-12 02:17:03 UTC

I'm not talking about theism, I'm talking about religion

2017-09-12 02:17:15 UTC

But you are making empirical claims based on psychology. These things misfire all the time.

2017-09-12 02:17:18 UTC

humans cannot feel the same towards equals as they do to a divine power

2017-09-12 02:17:21 UTC

define religion

2017-09-12 02:17:31 UTC
2017-09-12 02:18:12 UTC

Have you heard of 'phantom limbs', where amputees still feel sensations as if they still had their limb?

2017-09-12 02:18:29 UTC

The body is misfiring, even though it evolved this way.

2017-09-12 02:18:56 UTC

Just because psychology evolved a certain way does not mean it exists empirically.

2017-09-12 02:19:22 UTC

There a plenty of examples in psychology of sensory illusions.

2017-09-12 02:19:48 UTC

There are misfires but this doesn't mean that the reaction itself has no evolutionary purpose

2017-09-12 02:20:17 UTC

Again, you are confusing subjective purpose with objective empirical claims.

2017-09-12 02:20:18 UTC

also, this relies on empirical observation, and religion isn't emperical for most people

2017-09-12 02:20:25 UTC

Yes it is.

2017-09-12 02:20:26 UTC

unless they have an experience like that

2017-09-12 02:20:41 UTC

People literally think God will send them to Heaven. That's an empirical claim.

2017-09-12 02:21:12 UTC

Which there is no evidence for.

2017-09-12 02:21:22 UTC

Yes it is.

2017-09-12 02:21:43 UTC

but look at the psychological mechanisms that would lead to that kind of thinking

2017-09-12 02:22:45 UTC

The divine arbiter would decide whether their actions were meaningful enough to deserve heaven

2017-09-12 02:22:52 UTC

this gives their actions meaning

2017-09-12 02:23:58 UTC

I'm not saying that God doesn't give people meaning. I am say that it is based on sensory illusion.

2017-09-12 02:24:08 UTC

As far as we can tell.

2017-09-12 02:24:48 UTC

I worship my ancestors tbh

2017-09-12 02:25:03 UTC

๐Ÿ…ฑ๏ธaganism

2017-09-12 02:25:35 UTC

Sorry

2017-09-12 02:25:37 UTC

I'm back

2017-09-12 02:25:38 UTC

@Americana - MD#3916 You still believe in an afterlife?

2017-09-12 02:26:07 UTC

Not really

2017-09-12 02:26:10 UTC

No

2017-09-12 02:26:23 UTC

I think leaving a legacy is important though

2017-09-12 02:26:25 UTC

I now have a fidget spinner

2017-09-12 02:26:33 UTC

god as an actor is hard to prove

2017-09-12 02:26:33 UTC

What would happen if you learned that you were infertile?

2017-09-12 02:26:37 UTC

and still hasn't

2017-09-12 02:26:41 UTC

And building a future for you kids

2017-09-12 02:27:06 UTC

I would still work towards a better future for my family

2017-09-12 02:27:16 UTC

My folk in general

2017-09-12 02:27:27 UTC

Whioe that sounds good

2017-09-12 02:27:35 UTC

What if your family and folk was killed in a nuclear holocaust? Would you life have no meaning?

2017-09-12 02:27:53 UTC

Are you a neo-Paganist? (Hedonism) or the 'ancestoral blood and belief' kinda pagan?

2017-09-12 02:27:57 UTC

I'd still try to build something to leave for the world

2017-09-12 02:28:01 UTC

Some sort of remnant

2017-09-12 02:28:12 UTC

@Americana - MD#3916 What would you build?

2017-09-12 02:28:19 UTC

@Anglican the latter lol

2017-09-12 02:28:38 UTC

@Deleted User you got to work with whatever you've got fam ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿป

2017-09-12 02:28:47 UTC

Pagans generally fall into one or two groups, hedonists or hard hearted utilitarians.

2017-09-12 02:29:05 UTC

I'd agree with that

2017-09-12 02:29:15 UTC

I'm firm that you're a hard hearted utilitarian. You may be a bit better then others, not sure yet.

2017-09-12 02:29:19 UTC

In a macro sense

2017-09-12 02:29:33 UTC

I'm not like out sacrificing goats or anything lol

2017-09-12 02:29:38 UTC

Sure, there is over lap and people who fall outside of both.

2017-09-12 02:29:53 UTC

I'm a Christian by the way.

2017-09-12 02:30:00 UTC

That's cool

2017-09-12 02:30:10 UTC

I would love to be this brainwashed, where if everything I worshipped was destroyed but I was so conditions in the values that I would continue like a robot regardless.

2017-09-12 02:30:12 UTC

(((Abrahamic))) religion though tbh

2017-09-12 02:30:16 UTC

**Another check list off the Paganist checklist**

2017-09-12 02:30:21 UTC

๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

2017-09-12 02:30:21 UTC

**Erases check**

2017-09-12 02:30:24 UTC

Lol

2017-09-12 02:30:35 UTC

paganism > christianity

2017-09-12 02:30:35 UTC

I won't really argue it though

2017-09-12 02:30:47 UTC

>pagan in 2017

2017-09-12 02:30:49 UTC

At least they kill the shit out of kebab

2017-09-12 02:30:55 UTC

paganism is ethno-religious

2017-09-12 02:30:58 UTC

which is perfect

2017-09-12 02:31:12 UTC

exactly what religion should be

2017-09-12 02:31:20 UTC

The funny thing is that Pagans followed Christian law before Christ

2017-09-12 02:31:26 UTC

๐Ÿค”

2017-09-12 02:31:28 UTC

>believing in fairy tales
Humanity really are unimpressive.

2017-09-12 02:31:49 UTC

@Deleted User I remember being an edgy atheist in highschool too

2017-09-12 02:31:51 UTC

**B o g**

2017-09-12 02:32:05 UTC

I am neither, thanks.

2017-09-12 02:32:14 UTC

Lol

2017-09-12 02:32:19 UTC

He's actually trying to find his faith

2017-09-12 02:32:25 UTC

I'm just broken, maybe.

2017-09-12 02:32:27 UTC

but he's challanging everything.

2017-09-12 02:32:39 UTC

>reducing thousands of years of evolving tradition to a catch-all

2017-09-12 02:32:55 UTC

**Shrug** Maybe I'm wrong

2017-09-12 02:32:56 UTC

don't care
