I'm just glad that lockdown here ends on the 24th

2020-03-17 14:01:32 UTC

also the disease seems to barely affect children, it's only going for the Boomers

2020-03-17 14:01:40 UTC

which still kinda sucks, my parents are Boomers and shit

They're suspending HIPAA with respect to telemedicine

2020-03-17 15:43:15 UTC

To remove roadblocks that make it more difficult I guess

2020-03-17 16:02:43 UTC

And this in the country with the most critical care beds per capita

2020-03-17 16:04:34 UTC

Yep.

2020-03-17 16:04:41 UTC

So, Italy scenario then

2020-03-17 16:04:49 UTC

Eventually.

2020-03-17 16:05:37 UTC

I'm leaning towards that number I calculated before of roughly 0.1% of the population can get this without overwhelming the healthcare system.

2020-03-17 16:06:29 UTC

I keep finding that our ICU beds are ~85% full at any given time and we won't be able to kick many people out of them for COVID-19 patients.

2020-03-17 16:18:50 UTC

When you say "Italy scenario" it's good to remember 1/4 of Italians are over 60.....

2020-03-17 16:19:27 UTC

Wew.

2020-03-17 16:19:37 UTC

Kinda early in the day for such numbers.

2020-03-17 16:20:43 UTC

Not italy scenario. The 45 days number is really good because that gives plenty of time to move new equipment into place

2020-03-17 16:21:12 UTC

Military temporary hospitals for example

2020-03-17 16:21:37 UTC

Yeah, popup hospitals plus use of national stockpiles of ventilators could blunt this enough.

2020-03-17 16:22:11 UTC

More ICU beds per capita than any other country, best equipped military in history, two navy hospital ships (one on each coast), and hopefully a population that will follow the guidelines and slow the spread

2020-03-17 16:22:59 UTC

Italy has a couple helicopters and a donkey

2020-03-17 16:23:17 UTC

The good news is I'm seeing a rather lot of private action from companies taking this fairly seriously and lots of local governments seeming to do it right.

2020-03-17 16:24:18 UTC

That's not an accident. The government has been very good at ripping up regulations and red tape to set the states free. Decision making should be done at the lowest possible level in a country of this size

2020-03-17 16:24:55 UTC

I don't really want to be relying on Trump to wake up every morning feeling generous

2020-03-17 16:25:40 UTC

Trump has been pretty bad on messaging about this. The only good thread to his messaging is the stuff on national solidarity and helping your neighborhood.

2020-03-17 16:25:54 UTC

He was on the nothingburger and everything is fine train way too long.

2020-03-17 16:26:50 UTC

Messaging has been awful
