fyi for a serious take from me:
They told gamers "Don't like it, don't buy it", then their orders suffered. Badly. It was being completely and utterly crushed by literally every other game that was coming out in that timeframe.
So the bosses shit themselves when they realized "oh FUCK, we fucked up bad, we are so fucked."
Then the game got like a ... what is it, a 6 month delay? So they could desperately try to remove as much of the SJW stuff as possible in a short time, and hope they get a 2nd shot at marketing a couple months before the game finally comes out.

@tritrium its becuase they were trying to sale to s new audience. What they didnt realize was that the audience they already had didnt like the audience they were going for.

They have indeed gone on record as saying they've completely missed the mark and are trying to rebuild the game for more historical accuracy.

note: the audience they went for isnt actually an audience in the first place.
