@Timcast as far as red letter laws go, and thats comming from me, admittedly i have grown more libertarian on guns while till a few years ago... anyways, if for some reason it has to be immediatly then the cops need to knock and immediatly announce who they god dang are, espacialy if they come at ungodly times. We had a case here in germany of a hells angel shooting a cop (lethaly). He rightfully got off on self-defence. They didnt even try to let him know who they are, he was on edge expecting an attack by another gang, they broke the first lock on his door, he kept shouting stuff like "go away". They broke the second lock, he told them to leave him the f alone - still they didnt announce who they are. They were about to break the third and last lock on his door and he shot through the door. He couldnt know who this is, the conditions for selfdefense (in error, sure, but he couldnt know that) so he couldnt be convicted on that.
