Communism applied to reality works via forced planning of the economy. As long as your population and surrounding tech doesn't change much, you can plan for enough agricultural production to keep the population afloat and you're okay (provided no disasters happen). Having (or not having) rich people is irrelevant, since they're going to bail first thing at the faint mention of a communist takeover
