Emperor Commodus is the primary reason that the Roman empire collapsed in my opinion.
He had so many people killed off and assassinated, the own people in his government turned against him and killed him, and led to century of civil war and strife, he also ended Marcus Aurelius's campaigns against the northern barbarian tribes, who resumed their attacks on Rome as soon as Commodus died.
He was also obsessed with gladiatorial games, so much so that he hired a trainer, and fought people in extremely one sided fights, making his opponents fight with dulled swords and no armor.
He never actually tried to run Rome, and destroyed his father Marcus Aurelius's love for Rome.
One of the best Roman emperors, birthed one of the worst.
