It's possible that one day it might not be up to the server's owner. Discord needs to make money at some point. At some point they are going to need to process payments; money has to come in somehow. At that point they may be subject to leverage.
What if their payment processor says "You have to remove hate speech or we won't work with you".

They don't have to so far. They still have investor money. No credible attempt at a sustainable business model so far.
They apparently raised $50M last June, which will last a while even at the rate they're burning bandwidth. So they probably aren't particularly vulnerable to outside influence at the moment.
