The word Kaffir in the Quran means to hide the truth or to cover the truth in a state of awareness, Allah states that a kaffir will enter hell for eternity, it means those who were already aware of the truth and hid it from sight and lied about it for little gain or otherwise, usually this word is reserved for those with power, kings, leaders and those who are followed on-mass, the same applies to hypocrites and traitors.
The non believers are called al ladeena la uminoon, it means atheists or those who refuse to believe in a deity or a creator, it never states an eternity in hell but they will be punished for following (leaders or kings) and will enter hell for a limited time and the same applies to pagans and other religions.
Then their are Muslims and People of the scripture (Christians and Jews) they both have good and evil people amongst them and both could go to heaven or hell depending on their actions in worldly life, Allah clearly states that he will reward people of the scripture who were of good moral character and did not hide the truth or sell themselves for little money.

So next time the media claims that Muslims call everyone a kaffir, remember it's a word only reserved for the elites Like pharaohs and Kings, Priests and leaders who were shown signs or are aware of the truth and hide it or mislead the masses and the general population purposely and knowingly, and does not refer to the general populace.
