so we have plenty of failed society's which you yourself would consider superior to our society today, which has so far not failed

2020-03-28 04:33:42 UTC

meh i walked into that and saw it coming a mile away

2020-03-28 04:34:05 UTC

well but this is kind of a problem for you even if you do see it coming

2020-03-28 04:34:40 UTC

do i consider any dead society to have failed though?

2020-03-28 04:35:01 UTC

is a dead man a failure if he followed NML, had kids, etc

2020-03-28 04:35:40 UTC

this is an interesting point, just because a society no longer exists, does not mean that it failed. We wouldn't apply the same standard to individuals. But there's a big problem with this position.

2020-03-28 04:35:43 UTC

life cannot be preserved forever, with a man or with society

2020-03-28 04:36:04 UTC

Because you seem to measure failure in terms of NML, and no dead society can preserve life, have children, etc.

2020-03-28 04:36:16 UTC

if a society is dead it fails all 5 of these, because it no longer exists

2020-03-28 04:36:31 UTC

perhaps all societies are doomed to fail

2020-03-28 04:36:44 UTC

human nature seems to require it

2020-03-28 04:36:45 UTC

but then we still have failed societies which you value over non-failed ones

2020-03-28 04:36:53 UTC

entropy requires it more than anything

2020-03-28 04:37:12 UTC

also, i dont view nazi germany as a successful society

2020-03-28 04:37:18 UTC

well you couldn't

2020-03-28 04:37:27 UTC

because it no longer satisfies any of the five conditions you laid out

2020-03-28 04:37:27 UTC

they started a massively destructive war for revenge

2020-03-28 04:37:56 UTC

a dead society is not by definition a failed one though

2020-03-28 04:38:02 UTC

but it is

2020-03-28 04:38:19 UTC

because don't you define success in terms of the 5 precepts? or do you have a completely different definition of success?

2020-03-28 04:39:09 UTC

obeying NML is a success of itself, and it enables other forms of success

2020-03-28 04:39:19 UTC

but all things come to an end

2020-03-28 04:39:43 UTC

okay we have to get to these other forms of success then

2020-03-28 04:39:44 UTC

and most dead societies had abandoned the precepts

2020-03-28 04:39:59 UTC

and that precipitated their demise

2020-03-28 04:40:33 UTC

i don't know that this is the case

2020-03-28 04:40:38 UTC

what are the other forms of success though?

2020-03-28 04:40:58 UTC

typically more material forms

2020-03-28 04:41:06 UTC

high culture

2020-03-28 04:41:10 UTC

the arts

2020-03-28 04:41:45 UTC

Well I do love me the arts. But why should someone care about these sucesses? What's the argument for them over any other concievable form of success?

2020-03-28 04:42:28 UTC

stonks are fucking bullshit

2020-03-28 04:42:41 UTC

and what else is there?

2020-03-28 04:42:54 UTC

for instance, if i formulated success as the largest ice cream cone constructed by a society, why is that less valid then grading based on art or high culture?

2020-03-28 04:43:08 UTC

it seems like the most successful societies placed immense value on the arts, usually as a form of worship

2020-03-28 04:43:30 UTC

because as we see even in our own society, Worship God means either religion or money

2020-03-28 04:43:37 UTC

wait now we're getting circular, you can't say that successful societies placed value on arts when we're using arts to define successful societies

2020-03-28 04:43:53 UTC

With my metrics of largest ice cream cone, none of those societies were succesful.

2020-03-28 04:43:55 UTC

much of it is somewhat circular yea

2020-03-28 04:44:19 UTC

because it cant go any more basic in terms of ideas

2020-03-28 04:44:39 UTC

but then why is your circular reasoning superior to any other circular reasoning?
