He set himself up to be pro religion at first and then made it known he was anti religious
what
"opium of the people" isnt an anti religious quote
thats a misinterpretation
he was saying that religion was a kind of illusionary happiness, that people who were oppressed were religious because it gave them hope etc. back in those days opium was used as a sort of painkiller. in that same quote Marx refers to religion as the "sigh of the oppressed creature"
I’d beg to differ with what he meant considering where later regimes went in regards to religious policy
(State atheism)
1. Marx never advocated for secularism. he advocated for the withering away of the state
2. thats literally the quote. "Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people". im not sure how you can interpret this in any other way to what i mentioned. He is saying that religion gives people hope which is why so many oppressed people (workers) were religious. Opium in those days was literally a painkiller. He is essentially saying that it makes people complacent with this life while giving them hope for the next
if you just take that quote to mean "haha drugs bad therefore religion bad" then im not sure what to do with you lol
Isn’t something that gives you false hope arguably a bad thing?
@Eno Can you tell me about what his new claim is
retarded claim*
How can you read my mind?
I've been thinking that the entire time
its not as simple as that. you have a very simplistic view of it all. Marx is saying that its a product of the oppression the workers experience. he's not advocating for "state atheism" because "state atheism" will not, according to marx, be required once workers are liberated from this oppression @Flash
Marx was literally a Hegelian in his younger years lmao
According to Marxist theory there won’t be a state at all once workers are liberated
he's not saying religion bad or religion good, but rather religion is
"State Atheism"
@Ginnungagap thats why i put it in quotation marks
cause its what he said
Then how could there be state atheism at that point
flash i mean
I know
Thats stupid
He was heavily inspired by Hegel
``Then how could there be state atheism at that point``
thats exactly what im saying lmao
The state atheism comes during the dictatorship of the proletariat
its why your claim that stalin's state atheism is somehow linked to marx is absurd
and not based in any understanding of marx
because marx was not a secularist
nor a theocrat
Wdym the only thing stalin did was ban the open religious practice iirc
I mean every socialist regime I can think of was to an extent state atheist so had to have come from somewhere
yes they have all been largely secular
(then criminalized homosexuality to appease the orthodox church)
this does not mean marx was a secularist
and that in turn does not mean marx supported some sort of state religion
