Seems like the goals are being shifted

2018-12-10 00:23:51 UTC

You just said earlier there is no purpose to life in the atheist worldview

2018-12-10 00:23:53 UTC

parliament is mostly down to screaming matches between the conservatives and liberals

2018-12-10 00:23:58 UTC

Now you are attacking what gives that purpose

2018-12-10 00:24:22 UTC

Because it’s arbitrary

2018-12-10 00:24:46 UTC

either canada's about to enter a political age akin to the 2016 election in america

2018-12-10 00:24:51 UTC

It’s as arbitrary as god giving you purpose

2018-12-10 00:24:53 UTC

```But the problem is no two people view truth the same```
Yeah, something that is the awkward but necessary byproduct of living in a relativistic universe. Now, I think that while there *is* one unifying truth, no two observers can realistically ever see it the same way. We only perceive echoes of the truth, and the closest we get to truth is by combining our perspectives and ideas, combined with trial and error.
You could decide your purpose in life is to eat people and rape children if you wanted to
2018-12-10 00:24:58 UTC
or this is the last kick of the dead body of the canadian conservative party
People insist the bible is objective, and sure, it is, but people certainly don't interpret it the way they're supposed to, do they?
2018-12-10 00:25:26 UTC
hi
2018-12-10 00:25:34 UTC
hello
2018-12-10 00:25:34 UTC
i think it might be time to open the debate hall @The Big Oof
2018-12-10 00:25:44 UTC
Not only that but even if god existed, so what if you did anything wrong?
2018-12-10 00:26:05 UTC
bible is full of inconsistencies, to a point that it can be best described as a gestalt collection of subjectivist ramblings of several subsequent Levantine generations
2018-12-10 00:26:15 UTC
@FreshWholeMilk But you're not inclined, to, which is why it's a rarity <:30yoboomer:521380551316209668>
Do people in China go around eating their babies and raping children?
2018-12-10 00:26:22 UTC
you're going to need to point to that happening
2018-12-10 00:26:26 UTC
rather than dealing purely in hypotheticals
2018-12-10 00:26:40 UTC
What non-theistic country rapes children and eats babies?
2018-12-10 00:26:47 UTC
Idk they eat dogs and that’s pretty fucked up
2018-12-10 00:26:56 UTC
~~israel~~
2018-12-10 00:27:08 UTC
(((The Bible)))
2018-12-10 00:27:30 UTC
Eating dogs isn't really that weird, but I still think it's disgusting
2018-12-10 00:27:36 UTC
Dogs are our eternal allies, but they're still not us, don't get civnatic.
2018-12-10 00:27:40 UTC
human morality ultimately stems from our material reality and conditions - that includes stage of development, degree of scarcity and, yes, genes as well
the genome of man is probably unified in form enough for it to produce roughly similar ethical societies with slight variations here and there
2018-12-10 00:28:05 UTC
so we can't say that we get our morality from the bible
2018-12-10 00:28:07 UTC
we don't
2018-12-10 00:28:18 UTC
its more the case that bible gets its morality from the material basis of man and his environment
2018-12-10 00:28:34 UTC
I’m not saying that without God people will automatically do degenerate immoral stuff. Even without God, people still have a moral compass. But you cannot derive a coherent moral *system* from an atheistic worldview
2018-12-10 00:28:36 UTC
"You don't get your morality from the bible, but let me tell you how you get your morality from the bible" is usually how the conversation ends
2018-12-10 00:28:41 UTC
it's a compete cop out
2018-12-10 00:28:48 UTC
> But you cannot derive a coherent moral system from an atheistic worldview
of course you can
2018-12-10 00:28:54 UTC
Yes you can
2018-12-10 00:28:55 UTC
How?
2018-12-10 00:28:55 UTC
There are no coherent moral systems
2018-12-10 00:29:25 UTC
They are all adhoc and serve a general purpose of maintaining a society
2018-12-10 00:29:37 UTC
But they do not need to be consistent at all
2018-12-10 00:29:48 UTC
morality exists pertaining to the relations between two or more people - or, in an expanded sense, it exists pertaining to the relations between two or more *sentient beings.*
as long as you have two or more sentient beings, moral frameworks for the organisations of their relationship can be - and always have been -devised
