Okay, as I'm coming in (I was serving as a welcoming guide for the event for those new and I received complaints, so I headed to her direction) and this is what I heard
"These crackers needs to move aside for us" - ending it w/motioning 1 of her hands to her body/chest area, so I'm assuming to 'us' as her being black, black ppl.
To which I immediately hit her w/my reply of; "Whoa there, how would you like it if some white person came in and dropped the 'n' word like you just did?"
W/someone dropping that loudly at an event, yea I'm there for damage control

I tried to be as calm and professional as I could to diffuse the situation. The 2 others she was "preaching" to kinda slid away the moment I intervened... so I guess I helped 2 ppl that night? 🤷♂️

Ok, so firstly, let me just say that, if this is a professional event, she obviously should have exercised more tact than that. So I agree with you, the actual thing she said was not appropriate. However, I think the way in which you handled it - as well-meaning as it was - could have been more effective as well. So like you admitted you just overheard this out of context. I'm guessing you don't know this woman, you don't know what they're talking about or anything. So right off the bat, just going by what you've recounted, I think you came on too strongly.
Maybe a better way of saying the same thing would have been, "Excuse me, ma'am. I couldn't help but overhear your conversation just now and you realize this is a professional event and I felt what you just said was quite disrespectful."
Maybe she still gets angry, but it's a lot softer and more diplomatic than just walking up and saying, "Hey! You can't talk like that!"

I didn't outright tell her she can't speak like that, but rather tried to get her to exercise some form of empathy in how she'd feel if the tables were flipped
Her answer showed utter lack of such capacity
So that set the tone for the rest of the interaction
Like I said, my empathy is reserved for those who do have it. If she paused and didn't snap at me in the way she did, I'd have taken a bit more lenient approach following. Instead, she choose poorly

Well, if we're measuring the odds, I at least have actual examples I can point to of progressives whom I've engaged with in discussions like this and they treated me well despite disagreement. TYT and Feminist Frequency being the most well-known examples I can think of. I also have talked briefly with the president of BLM NY, Hawk Newsome as another data point.
