But the C-Word doesn’t have as much “Racial History and Baggage” attached to it

2020-02-13 16:19:17 UTC

I tried to be as calm and professional as I could to diffuse the situation. The 2 others she was "preaching" to kinda slid away the moment I intervened... so I guess I helped 2 ppl that night? 🤷‍♂️

2020-02-13 16:19:34 UTC

They were being preached to against their will lol

2020-02-13 16:19:50 UTC

Does that mean the N-Word has absolutely no meaning in a country like Latvia or Poland?

2020-02-13 16:20:22 UTC

Or a Central Asian Former USSR Nation

2020-02-13 16:21:33 UTC

I was going to say probably if they only know the historical connotation of the word and not the way some people in the hood use it

2020-02-13 16:21:56 UTC

Spppp

2020-02-13 16:22:19 UTC

A white person can drop the word "nigger" under VERY strict guide rules outlined by Chris Rock. 10 pts to those who know that skit lol

2020-02-13 16:22:46 UTC

Ok, so firstly, let me just say that, if this is a professional event, she obviously should have exercised more tact than that. So I agree with you, the actual thing she said was not appropriate. However, I think the way in which you handled it - as well-meaning as it was - could have been more effective as well. So like you admitted you just overheard this out of context. I'm guessing you don't know this woman, you don't know what they're talking about or anything. So right off the bat, just going by what you've recounted, I think you came on too strongly.

Maybe a better way of saying the same thing would have been, "Excuse me, ma'am. I couldn't help but overhear your conversation just now and you realize this is a professional event and I felt what you just said was quite disrespectful."

Maybe she still gets angry, but it's a lot softer and more diplomatic than just walking up and saying, "Hey! You can't talk like that!"

2020-02-13 16:23:01 UTC

Like I have a friend who went on a server I was a mod on to literally fight the mods so he can say the N-word with an a

2020-02-13 16:23:07 UTC

20 pts to those who don't give a shit and are Chad enough to say nigger instead of N-word

2020-02-13 16:23:19 UTC

LOL

2020-02-13 16:24:04 UTC

I didn't outright tell her she can't speak like that, but rather tried to get her to exercise some form of empathy in how she'd feel if the tables were flipped

2020-02-13 16:24:16 UTC

Her answer showed utter lack of such capacity

2020-02-13 16:24:31 UTC

So that set the tone for the rest of the interaction

2020-02-13 16:25:50 UTC

Like I said, my empathy is reserved for those who do have it. If she paused and didn't snap at me in the way she did, I'd have taken a bit more lenient approach following. Instead, she choose poorly

2020-02-13 16:26:43 UTC

> she choose poorly

This makes it sound like you later pummeled her into the concrete with your spiked bat.

2020-02-13 16:26:51 UTC

LOL

2020-02-13 16:26:56 UTC

Mentally maybe

2020-02-13 16:27:06 UTC

But no, I'm not into physically harming ppl

2020-02-13 16:27:15 UTC

weak

2020-02-13 16:27:33 UTC

Again, she might ultimately have responded the same way to me, I don't know. But would you say it's *more likely* she'd have responded better to me?

2020-02-13 16:27:36 UTC

Tho I suspect I may have lost my professional cool the moment she called me a white supremacist. I had to immediately disengage so I don't get sucked into saying shit publicly that is not venue appropriate

2020-02-13 16:28:40 UTC

Perhaps? Tho if I were a betting man, I'd wager against you in having any different reaction from her or concluding engagement

2020-02-13 16:33:13 UTC

Well, if we're measuring the odds, I at least have actual examples I can point to of progressives whom I've engaged with in discussions like this and they treated me well despite disagreement. TYT and Feminist Frequency being the most well-known examples I can think of. I also have talked briefly with the president of BLM NY, Hawk Newsome as another data point.

2020-02-13 16:33:45 UTC

And the only difference, really, is the empathy I brought with me to the conversation.

2020-02-13 16:34:25 UTC

And the end result? Did they double down or actually change their mind and 180'd?

2020-02-13 16:36:11 UTC

I didn't have the opportunity to talk with them long enough to make radical progress, but the conversations ended pleasantly and I shifted them a few degrees closer to me than someone who thinks they're only in it for power would have. So that's something. Proof of concept at least. And if more people treated them like that, I'd be willing to bet they wouldn't just ghost us. Because why would they?

2020-02-13 16:37:52 UTC

I gave up trying to understand leftists. My imaginations simply aren't creative enough to go down their twisted clown world logic

2020-02-13 16:39:11 UTC

Well, as a Cartesian Skeptic, I've gone down the postmodern road before. I might not understand everything they think; but I have a reasonable idea, based on that experience. Enough to generally note some areas where they're right and some where they're wrong, and to know the reasons *why* in each case.

2020-02-13 16:40:11 UTC

As an ex-Moaist, ex-feminist, ex-SJW, I understand at least some of their motivations for why they feel the way they do. I just have the wherewithal to know when it goes too far to become toxic and violent.

2020-02-13 16:41:36 UTC

huh... well then, you've gone down the rabbit hole far deeper than I have so yea. I'd wager then you'd have far better insights into their world than I do

2020-02-13 16:44:30 UTC

Btw, the fact that I'm an EX of all those things is partly why I know it's possible to reach them - at least in theory - because I'm an example of that reform. Granted, I wasn't so far left as to be an unhinged authoritarian, so maybe there's a line beyond which it's impossible to step back form; but by and large, that line is further out than most people think. So like someone like AOC, as radical as she seems, is not yet crossed that line, in my opinion. People like her can still be saved, it's just a matter of do you have the will and the skill to be able to do it.

2020-02-13 16:44:48 UTC

I think you're just being intentional difficult then @TheGhostAgent

2020-02-13 16:46:10 UTC

Well then I stand corrected.
And what do you mean I'm being intentionally difficult? 0.o

2020-02-13 16:46:26 UTC

I just gave him a compliment...

2020-02-13 16:46:51 UTC

Well what isn't there to understand? It's pretty simple when you ask people their core beliefs

2020-02-13 16:47:34 UTC

Well when their core beliefs is orange/white/*insert arbitrary standards here* = bad... I find it difficult to 'win' or 'persuade' such core principles

2020-02-13 16:49:28 UTC

Well you assumed that you didnt confirm it.

2020-02-13 16:49:57 UTC

And the majority of leftists aren't black supremacists
