likely it'll just be a political repeat of the age of exploration

2018-07-09 21:55:49 UTC

we could potential have planets called mcdonalds land (remember virginia)

2018-07-09 21:56:18 UTC

wha

2018-07-09 21:56:25 UTC

what happened in virginia

2018-07-09 21:56:41 UTC

if I remember right virginina is named for a corperation that existed at the time

2018-07-09 21:56:51 UTC

whaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

2018-07-09 21:56:53 UTC

cool

2018-07-09 21:58:23 UTC

@MountainMan I think it's more likey that individual nations will conduct their own colonization efforts

2018-07-09 21:58:43 UTC

and it would take some historic event for the world to unite, maybe

2018-07-09 21:59:09 UTC

So would that whole country colonize the planet? So we have a planet being under China, whilst China still has land on earth?

2018-07-09 21:59:18 UTC
2018-07-09 22:00:20 UTC

@MountainMan It could be split

2018-07-09 22:00:29 UTC

I honesty don't know

2018-07-09 22:00:29 UTC

Outer Space Treaty still exists.

2018-07-09 22:00:38 UTC

big hmmmmm

2018-07-09 22:00:44 UTC

No land off earth can legally be claimed by any signatory.

2018-07-09 22:00:45 UTC

we could have another treaty of tordesillas

2018-07-09 22:01:00 UTC

hmmm

2018-07-09 22:01:17 UTC

And such claims are likely to be completely ignored by any signatories as well.

2018-07-09 22:02:12 UTC

@Somi when colonization becomes a thing I'm sure that treaty will ge torn up

2018-07-09 22:02:26 UTC

^

2018-07-09 22:02:53 UTC

I'm thinking pretty sci fie. So tech for colonization ain't a problem. I'm just thinking of how the practicality would work.

2018-07-09 22:02:58 UTC

Like, who gets to own the new lands?

2018-07-09 22:03:15 UTC

treaties

2018-07-09 22:03:16 UTC

Would it even work without the world uniting under a single banner?

2018-07-09 22:03:19 UTC

treaties

2018-07-09 22:03:20 UTC

nice

2018-07-09 22:03:29 UTC

I'm gonna be pretty honest

2018-07-09 22:03:42 UTC

It's very, very likely that the modern definition of a nation state will be obsolete by that time.

2018-07-09 22:04:13 UTC

There'd probably be a clearer dividing line between 'access to space' and 'no access to space' than between, say, the US and China.

2018-07-09 22:04:30 UTC

hmmmm

2018-07-09 22:04:55 UTC

it's entierly possible the private sector will be the first space colonists I refer you again to the virginia corperation

2018-07-09 22:05:05 UTC

or more accuratly the london corperation

2018-07-09 22:05:23 UTC

Did someone say SpaceX

2018-07-09 22:05:36 UTC

^

2018-07-09 22:05:49 UTC

I'm gonna immigrate to the musklands

2018-07-09 22:06:02 UTC

if they colonize a planet, who owns the newly colonized world?

2018-07-09 22:06:11 UTC

Do the corporation own it?

2018-07-09 22:06:19 UTC

I don't see that working out.

2018-07-09 22:06:24 UTC

But, refer to The Expanse for a semi-accurate indication if you ask me. Certain vested interests will be held with an iron grip by nation states/Future UN, while less vested interests can be summarized as 'no laws, only private entities calling themselves cops'

2018-07-09 22:06:48 UTC

ten bucks says the UN gets dissolved in 20 years
