I dunno. It could also be that these people always existed but people just didn't know what it was. My uncle has Asperger's, something he refuses to accept. Out in the country, people just thought that such people were weirdos and strange. Not a mental condition.
But anytime something new pops up there is also a kind of panic to check as many people as possible to see if your patients actually have this condition that you only now know about.
