The principle is that if we’re going to stick around and *not* leave, we might as well as get them to bow down to us.
Because again, if we for whatever reason stick around, at least try making Iran stop making moves.
We shouldn’t fight to have equal or fair, we should fight to have better.

Well that’s the point of negotiating, is to try and get that objective. If we give them some lee way they might strike a deal, or maybe if we’re hardass then allow some things to slide
But still you should always try to get a better deal
Giving them leeway to negotiate back and forth, which can't happen if we're acting in bad faith
