@Yek of course its justified, we categorize things based on much lesser differences. there are recognized subspecies of elk that you'd need a trained zoologist to discern between because the differences are so subtle. if you think the differences between chinese and europeans, or europeans and africans, or native americans and abos, arent enough to warrant race you have some sort of brain problem

@blanc Its an informal biological category. There are lower taxonomical frequencies such as sub species, however even that isnt universally accepted in mdoern taxonomy.
