i.e. you can try to be a good person and believe in Jesus all you want, but if God doesn't make it happen for you theres nothing you can do
That's just justification by grace
That's hypercalvinism, not actual calvinism
Hypercalvinism is basically just brainlet prots who hear about calvinism deciding to become "calvinists" without knowing what calvinists actually believe
Basically what everyone thinks of calvinism but what almost nobody actually believes
hmm ok i see
Ive never meet a Reformed/Calvinist ever think that someone living in and enjoying their sin is saved. It doesnt mean they/we are free of sin, but there should be evidence of repentance and a true turning away from sin once you are justified (saved). The salvation is the work of God. Repentance and regeneration is the evidence in your life of God's work.
It does offer an assurance of salvation that God would maintain me even if I transgressed before dying. (For example, I say something bad out of road rage when someone cuts me off in traffic before a semi-truck hits me and kills me. God will keep you)
My salvation isnt in me keeping the laws or traditions of men, but in keeping faith in the finished work of Jesus the Christ as explained in the Scriptures. (Romans and Galatians)
isnt that assurance the same as what is assured through justification by grace? if someone is a sinner(as if someone couldn't be a sinner), so long as they believe in Jesus they will be saved.
Roughly speaking, yes
im just saying, that isnt necessarily unique to Calvinism is it?
No, i dont think it is. But somehow Reformed Theology gets twisted by people throwing bumper sticker slogans on it instead of actually trying to see what we are saying
>we
Oh God it's a retard
?
Also, that might be taking the Lord's name in vain.
Doubt
@ninjacats im pretty ecumenical in regards to Christian theology. There is a lot more that we agree on that we disagree on.
JESUS
Yep. Thats what it is about.
Tbf Calvinism itself has kinda screwed itself with bumper sticker theological statements, most of the phrases people use against calvinism come from calvinists trying to write pithy aphorisms and acronyms
Muh TULIP, yes?
exactly
I would say that is unfortunately true. As opposed to returning to scripture, as basis, there is often a need for mental tips to help people understand.
In regards to TULIP, it was originally established in opposition to another theological tradition, but it stuck more with the Reformed crowd. We seem to have to carry the yokes we make. ha
ok so let me get this straight because i keep getting confused. calvinism (not hyper-calvinism) is basically just saying that God already knows everything past, present, and future, and therefore willingly has damned some people.
I would carry the T in TULIP banner more than the others. Only because I realize I am truly a monster without Christ.
youre still a monster, just a saved monster
yes, by God's Grace
Calvinism basically states that God is sovereign over the universe and knows everything about His creation and created it in the way He deemed fit.
the idea of the afterlife being eternal scares me
my pastor talked about going to a funeral of a family member who did not believe
This is a pretty good explanation of TULIP in proper arrangement, took me a bit to dig up, read it a while back
It was formulated as a rejection of Armenianism specifically
@Mozalbete ⳩ I'd be interested in your take here actually
Yeah, thats what i was talking about it being built in reaction to another theological tradition
@ninjacats a lot of the mental wresting people have with the issue of election is laid out in Romans 9
It's still doctrine, TULIP just rearranges things out of order of importance, personally idk where I sit but it's definitely not the charicature it's presented as
@SUPER MALE VITALITY™ right. I wish they would have put up a better acronym like GRACE. God is sovereign over creation and everyone in it. Redemption is from and through Christ and He alone. All human-centric attempts at salvation will fail. Christ is our only hope. Evidence of faith, not works-based. That was my 40 second attempt at explaining the Gospel in acronym haha.
