Paying in foreign currencies will almost always be more expensive than international transaction fees
They always put a charge if you pay in foreign cash. Those charges can be very high

Can't you get a travel card or something like that? There are certain prepaid credit cards which are especially designed for travel
In Switzerland we have that one, it's great for travel. I bet there's something like that in the UK
It's much cheaper than using a regular credit card, and if it gets stolen abroad, there is no big loss since it was prepaid and you're not going to put a lot on it
monzo does the first £200 of foreign transactions without a fee, then it's 3% after
I believe there are similar cards like that so I'll need to have a look
For the record, 3% is likely much less than paying with foreign cash

I get an Amex here with 1 star alliance mile for every dollar spent
But no one accepts amex
