Eh, I still think the core should be literacy, mathematical competence, understanding the scientific method and history/civics, but that firearms safety as an extension of civics education should be essential

Disagree: A core. If you cannot at least make a good showing against someone your own size, the force additive and multiple a firearm gives is useless.
