If by "party of science" you mean the left, I'm not sure they have a monopoly on fear of lab grown food. Plenty of people on the right do as well. And I wouldn't say that caution, at the very least isn't warranted. There's a lot of history of corners being cut in harmful ways to bring down the cost of food, as well as pretty questionable uses of bioengineering. But I am somewhat optimistic that we can get to a point where these pursuits will pay off in a big way in the near future. Plus lab grown mean is a lot less gross to me than getting my protein from ground up bugs...

2019-09-03 11:01:02 UTC

my biggest worry about the labgrown stuff is that we will reach a point one day where people will be just eating paste basically 😦

2019-09-03 11:08:05 UTC

Part of my optimism comes from the fact that as things are right now, the real versions of things are obtainable enough that the lab grown stuff has to be up to a quality level that's comparable to compete.

2019-09-03 11:30:48 UTC

i have no doubt that it will be, i think it will be even better than anything being made naturally

2019-09-03 11:31:32 UTC

just look at how much farming has changed already, the tomatoes that we eat today, don't taste like the tomatoes our grandparents ate at all, they don't look the same either

@GrumpyGabe
Best I can do for ya: https://www.sciencefocus.com/future-technology/the-artificial-meat-factory-the-science-of-your-synthetic-supper/
The answer is still ***NO.*** That means meet, leather, IDGAF, artificial means artificial.

2019-09-03 17:11:52 UTC

Well since we are talking about lab grown products as an option not a mandate. I am a hard yes for a competitive marketplace and potential solutions to malnutrition

2019-09-03 17:18:34 UTC

By party of science i was mocking the left because they claim to be exactly that because of their embrace of the climate change hysteria. Then of course they refuse to ignore economic science, life sciences, gmos, etc

2019-09-03 17:31:00 UTC

You never said mandate. I don't even need to look, I remember.
I am concerned that market forces will eventually push relatively safe REAL meat out in favor of chemical meat.

2019-09-03 17:35:12 UTC

Thats what markets are for, to meet the desires of the public

2019-09-03 17:39:02 UTC

it;s like you didn't even hear what walmart said. they asked people to NOT bring guns into their stores. surely no one will violate such a request

2019-09-03 18:02:23 UTC

Does Target not sell firearms then?

2019-09-03 18:03:44 UTC

I don't think so

2019-09-03 18:03:58 UTC

That kinda makes them a big target.

2019-09-03 18:04:53 UTC

a bigger Target

2019-09-03 18:05:26 UTC

>target tried to expand here and failed within a couple years

2019-09-03 18:08:43 UTC

Target is actually dong fairly well in the world of Amazon 2 day shipping

2019-09-03 18:11:48 UTC

Im sure my ammo dealer will be disappointed about walmart not selling handgun ammo, lol

Note the "we're mobile" since he sets up shop on the side of the road and sells from the back of a panel truck

I thought that meant, they can send bullets through cells phones PHEW close one

2019-09-03 18:19:15 UTC

Haha, he already posted on it

@Mandatory Carry As much as you seem to want to act like you know way more about this than I do, the article you posted contains nothing that runs counter to my original statement.
But good for you for trying.

2019-09-03 20:58:51 UTC

and mandy's out here telling us that 2+2=4... smh

I don't know if I want to go to a Walmart anymore.

2019-09-03 22:15:58 UTC

The Bee did it again. Taking reality and making it satire.

2019-09-03 22:19:18 UTC

@Mandatory Carry That's not the same thing at all. That's what we're getting in some of our food RIGHT NOW as a way to sell by-products of conventional meat production. Lab-grown meat could potentially make processes like this that use a lot of chemicals unnecessary. I would have a hard time finding a video that does a better job of reinforcing my case.

2019-09-03 22:19:58 UTC

If you don't have a WSJ subscription

2019-09-03 22:26:15 UTC

Well, I'll decline wal-marts request that I not carry in their store on what occasions I go in there, but I'll throw them a bone and carry in their store a lot less, since I'll be less inclined to do business with them in the future.

2019-09-03 22:28:52 UTC

@GrumpyGabe
The answer is still ***NO.***
You'd have better luck asking me to get chipped. (*Also* not going to happen.)
Additionally, you may foolishly trust companies to not use chemicals even worse than that-
I know better. 😔

2019-09-03 22:40:36 UTC

@Mandatory Carry That's fine if you aren't into it, I'd never have it forced on anyone. I think a lot of people's aversion to it comes from lack of good information, though.

2019-09-03 23:12:00 UTC

Ok.
I'll start from the top maybe, tell me where you loose me:
Developing fake meat pushes meat out of the market;
Fake meat gets made with chemicals that should never be invested, in any quantity;
We all die.
Seriously, ban fake meat. GMO's don't scare me, fake meat does. (And chips, they're fine for dogs, but not people.)

2019-09-03 23:13:29 UTC

>developing fake meat pushes meat out of the market
You've lost me

2019-09-03 23:33:43 UTC

Nice try, @Legalize.
*"Toxic chemicals,"* such as *AMMONIA* that *was* being used in McDonalds meat.
And there are no voices, that's God damn it, Leag, *that's not how PTSD works...* Jesus Fucking Christ In The Ass, even that fruadster FEINSTIRN knows better.

@Beemann
Ok, good, now I understand the problem;
Assume meat is $1/lb.
Fake meat is say 75¢/lb.
Fake meat gets bought up, real meat is pushed out of the market until one day you walk in and there's none in the butcher's section. No real meat at all.
IDK if there's any SG1 fans here, but they had a particularly interesting pair of episodes on exactly this: A little digging and I found it:
https://stargate.fandom.com/wiki/2010_(episode)
Ten years in the future, *"Earth has transformed into a seeming paradise of long life and perfect health thanks to an alliance with the Aschen Confederation... (But) Aschen medical treatments have made over 90% of humans infertile, allowing them to bloodlessly take over the Earth through a long-term invasion."*
This degree of evil is "difficult" to beleive, but then again, prove it's not the point; I know I can't.

2019-09-03 23:45:47 UTC

You mean Snopes refuted it.
Sorry, I wouldn't even cite them earlier today when they substantiated a claim I made. Ya. That bad.
You're arguing a difference without a dustintion, based on a premise that something is not going to happen when in both can and historically has. (I'm a historian, ¿remember? Sawdust in bread and ammonia in meat...)
Cheaper toxic chemical filled food products... ¿What could go wrong?
