Hard to say but the vibe I always got was that he’s not all that bright, but he thinks his audience Is too dumb to pick up on how half-baked the things he says are. Which may have been largely true in the past, but now that he’s on the national stage, what he says is more carefully scrutinized than what he’s probably used to.
