We're not a theocracy

2018-11-20 22:31:45 UTC

canada or usa

2018-11-20 22:31:54 UTC

No, because the government decided to secularize

2018-11-20 22:32:05 UTC

During the formation of both nations

2018-11-20 22:32:38 UTC

Theocracies are a thing. Not all religions are the same though.

2018-11-20 22:33:45 UTC

Praise be government. deliver me from these nazis. We need a singular one world government so everyone must worship and follow the rules I demand.
but Christians are just as bad right Beeman.

2018-11-20 22:34:00 UTC

Buddhists too right?

2018-11-20 22:34:06 UTC

Where did these goalposts go?

2018-11-20 22:34:31 UTC

>religion is the solution to the problem
>no it isn't
>where's the Christian world government tho?

2018-11-20 22:35:35 UTC

Religion bad >:^(

2018-11-20 22:35:37 UTC

It sounds like the argument is whether or not to impose a spiritual discipline to a spiritless society

2018-11-20 22:35:47 UTC

My point was people distracted by milquetoast religion tend not to worship the state.

2018-11-20 22:36:14 UTC

I'm not sure that it stays milquetoast when given more influence

2018-11-20 22:36:22 UTC

in the absence of religion people tend to start worshiping the state

2018-11-20 22:36:33 UTC

Something proven to be far worse

2018-11-20 22:36:47 UTC

That’s one of the reasons why the Soviets tried to remove religion from the Russians.

2018-11-20 22:37:07 UTC

And Nazi plans for after the war

2018-11-20 22:37:21 UTC

Hell, they made a nazi Protestant church

2018-11-20 22:37:37 UTC

When people stop looking up, the only place they can look is around.

2018-11-20 22:37:45 UTC

or worse...down

2018-11-20 22:39:37 UTC

I'm so sick of the idea of separation of church and state being about just protecting the state from the church. To quote a Swede "They really got their grip on power, they exterminated the Swedish state church, so they basically killed God and replaced him with the Social Democratic Party. That's why for most Swedes, Social Democracy is more of a religion than an actual political philosophy. "

2018-11-20 22:39:45 UTC

Be man, it sounds as if you’re looking for a perfect solution. That isn’t going to happen. I’m not saying that religion is always going to work for every single individual. The reason why is because people are sinful by nature. What that means is that they’re going to make poor decisions and stray away from the truth. Nobody is immune to it. That doesn’t make religion invalid.

2018-11-20 22:40:22 UTC

Separation of church and state goes both ways
I'm not looking for a perfect solution, I'm saying there isn't a singular solution

2018-11-20 22:40:36 UTC

As someone who is not religious. I do not think society is ready to move beyond religion yet. Some people are and that's fine. but we need a movement that keeps the values like individualism alive as society becomes more secular.

2018-11-20 22:41:08 UTC

This is kind of thing about questioning why the fence is there before tearing it out.

2018-11-20 22:41:13 UTC

Sounds like you're advocating for another Billy Graham era

2018-11-20 22:42:51 UTC

The fence is already torn down. I don't think people are going to be happy with you gluing the splinters back together

2018-11-20 22:42:52 UTC

We do need a revival. 😃

2018-11-20 22:42:58 UTC

By the way, apparently Brett Weinstein and Richard Dawkins had a discussion about religion and its role in society. Does anyone know if they put of video of it yet?

2018-11-20 22:43:29 UTC

I'm a fan of Theodemocracy

2018-11-20 22:44:03 UTC

Sounds like thermodynamics

2018-11-20 22:44:03 UTC

You're also a dirty Keynesian tho

2018-11-20 22:44:16 UTC

Are you advocating ovens there mate

2018-11-20 22:44:47 UTC
2018-11-20 22:45:18 UTC

Brett Weinstein actually argues that religion is a natural cultural evolution and has things society needs.

2018-11-20 22:45:26 UTC

or something like that

2018-11-20 22:47:00 UTC

@Beemann Who's the Keynesian? Should they get a free helicopter ride?

2018-11-20 22:47:16 UTC

Cats is

2018-11-20 22:47:26 UTC

She’s a heretic >: (

2018-11-20 22:49:03 UTC

Harris argues that spirituality and cultural cohesiveness are needed, but not the metaphysical

2018-11-20 22:49:54 UTC

That's the thing though, I think society needs a sort of secular blueprint for general cohesiveness now that a lot of the traditional methods have been torn down
