idk people should be tortured if the crime is heinous enough (ok this part is saracasm)

i mean a system based off recovery does make sense

i think the problem here lies not with the punishment itself

but with people who want that criminal to pay

Honestly the problem lies with why the person did what they did, and the worse the crime they do the more we should be trying to figure out why so we can make sure it doesn't happen again

Alternatively, that's the easy answer we tell ourselves to try and stave off the idea that we're all one sufficiently and specifically bad day away from doing terrible things

And we just haven't found out the real reason because people are hard to figure out

Punishment doesn't work, psychology has worked when we have applied it after studying what we need to.

Sociology works too

We might find out in the search that its impossible to get a 0% crime rate, but if we do find that out we can find out what the next best thing is

punishment makes us feel good

it makes us get to have justice

I agree we're a scary species. I agree we desire vengeance on an almost primal level. I disagree that its something we should allow, or even that we should want it.
