If WW2 started, it probably would have been because of trotsky and his attempts to spread communism, that would lead to the league or hitler responding violently, causing the USSR to be invaded, speculate how you will about how that would have gone down, but regardless, even if the exact same events happened, it is likely that the cold war would have still happened, there would be no way that the US would ever see marxism as a good thing, and would do anything to stop it.

@Deleted User From most of the sources I have read, Stalin was an absolutely awful military leader. He attempted to make every single major military go through him, but when the Nazi's invaded he barricaded himself away for over a week, leaving the army commanders unable to respond to the invasion in any organised fashion. On the other hand Trotsky was extremely competent and had considerable experience, having founded and commanded the Red Army during the Great Revolutionary War.
