I have no evidence besides my thoughts but it almost always happens because I am breathing very shallowingly and slowly beforehand

So my body attempts to compensate by demanding air and refusing to let me get a satisfactory breathe of air

Might help. There are plenty of videos on breath control online. Just make sure to do them consistently every night.
