Legatus Augusti (Augustus' legate) was the highest, most important one, that had the role to moderate the private province of the emperor, Aegyptus, for this reason it was a person close to the emperor
If we talk of emperor and not princeps
On a technical point of view Vespasianus was the first emperor with the law "lex de imperio vespasiani" (the law regarding the power of Vespasianus)
In which all the charges the emperors had were given to their chosen successor all in one block, effectively making it an autocracy
The early-mid Roman empire was peak aestetics
Hiel
It was Rome greatest period
Five Good Emperors were peak Rome
I'd say it ended with the mid 200s
@IliasSpook five good emperors?
Iirc it was the period also known as the pax romana
Well I mean, all the Roman empire was, pax Romana is a term born from Augustus' propaganda proclaiming that with his victories he managed to bring peace not only to Rome but to all the population under the empire
But what do you mean with "five good emperors"?
It's a term ascribed to the series of 5 emperors preceding Commodus
Was Pax Romana truly peaceful
Ah yes
I legitimately wonder that myself
Up to a limited point @OrthoNinten
Was it more peaceful than say Pax Mongolica
Traianus was an emperor who had conquests in mind, he did wage war often, and unlike common belief Marcus Aurelius made a lot of wars, even though defensive ones @OrthoNinten
It's a term used for propaganda, not an historical fact tbh
I remember talking about it some history classes
It was never clear to me though how peaceful it was
Honestly mostly it wasn't, it's more associated with the peak years of a great civilization if you ask me
Some years were peaceful but only from a specific point of view, wars were continously made in the ancient world
@The Man Himself greetings fellow legionary
@Mankn II if the emperor made me procurator Augusti we can be co-workers. procurator Augusti was the chief financial officer of a province during the Principate (30 BC – AD 284). A fiscal procurator worked alongside the legatus Augusti pro praetore (imperial governor) of his province but was not subordinate to him, reporting directly to the emperor.
