It wasn't even political speech, he made a joke
One that actually mocks Nazis, and that was used to call him a Nazi
These real life consequences speak very clearly, public appearances and voicing political views are high risk low reward ventures for most people
I mean that is more of an issue if you *are* someone in the postgrad/100K club. Take like Bogossian. He's in trouble because his career is as an academic and academia is in that small club. I'm in heavy industry and XYZ mid-level industrial producer does not even *have* a PR department.
It's an issue at every level
Lindsay Shepherd is another example. She also has mouths to feed, if only her own, idk.
It's an open secret that certain papers are advised not to be published so as to not harm one's own career chances.
Lindsay's career *in academia*?
Generally, not just in academia
Employers don't want trouble, is this news for you?
Imagine having to feed several mouths
What risks are you willing to take?
It's easy enough to test. Any one of these people could put out a casting call for people who are in the demographic.
Oh please
I'll take your words seriously when you walk the walk
I'd go on any of those shows in a heartbeat.
What's your current occupation?
Do you have kids?
Just so I know what your risk is
I am in heavy industry. We build capital goods. I have been doing this for more than a decade.
So at least I wouldn't *not* recommend putting yourself out there, after all you don't have much to risk.
I'm only saying it's easy for you.
Other people don't have that privilege of being lone wolves or having low financial risk
It's not that uncommon. Look I can give you an example. I got celled here for posting a meme that was considered 'NSFW'. My *boss* thought it was funny and likely the *owner of the company* would have laughed at it. Because outside of academia very few people consider these things to be serious offenses. We are too busy making things that work.
Celled here
Is that your idea of serious consequences?
Do you understand that people like Harris and Peterson have *existential fears* ?
Posting rights or whatever on discord is child's play
How do you even compare that, it's ridiculous
Like playing with plastic swords in the backyard and calling it real war
Peterson and Harris have existential fears because their careers are based in membership in a culture that is censorious. I don't. Most people don't. Most people live in a world where **nobody** reads the NY Times.
That is precisely my point, how did you not get this
I was talking about people losing opportunities in their own respective fields
What do you have to lose compared to them, nothing
And I was talking about the narrow feild of perspectives people like Harris are exposed to.
I explained that the people who are actually capable of standing up to Harris have too much riding on it
It makes no sense for them to challenge him, it's a net negative risk-reward scenario
So those who do "challenge" him tend to agree with him
This is why echo chambers happen
Among other reasons, but it's the number one reason
The echo chamber happens because of selection bias. When you only speak to people within a narrow demographic.....
