I'd rather have a fortified community in the middle of nowhere, capable of going five years without access to the outside world, which also maintains deep connections to interest groups and prepper groups throughout the surrounding region.

The most that'll come of political dispute will be random acts of violence, perpetrated by insurgents, who'll be met by the end of a barrel, just as they always have and always will be.

Basically, the goal is to have the capacity to arm friendly forces and wipe out hostile forces as efficiently as possible, with the understanding that the US military will no longer be a serious threat because it's too busy fighting a civil war.

So far the political dispute hasn't infected a noticeable portion of the military. This is the one thing stopping shit from hitting the fan. If it gets far enough into the world's biggest military, things can go wrong.

Go to 1905 and the idea of a massive, no-holds barred war between England and Germany would be downright laughable. You'd be dismissed as a conspiracy nut. If you told people in 1925 that we were going to have a repeat of that, except much worse, 15 years down the road, you'd be laughed out of the room yet again.
