Or we could understand that the left-right axis is a holdover from the French revolution, and only models politics accurately when you're dealing with a singular issue, or two massive tribal groups.
For a while the American right was the evangelical conservative movement, and the left was simply anyone who opposed them - which included everything from libertarians and technocrats to black radicals and communists. "Left" was such an incredibly broad term, and it only made sense when the Christian conservative movement was a cohesive force that could effectively dominate one end of the left-right axis by themselves.

Now that the right has fragmented, and different left-right factions are supporting each other on some issues and opposed to each other on other issues, the left-right division doesn't really make sense anymore.
Even Richard Spencer tends to be "left wing" when it comes to socialistic policies. It's just that he wants socialism for white people, and he tends to find common cause with people like Louis Farrakhan who want the same thing, but for black people.
