Or we could understand that the left-right axis is a holdover from the French revolution, and only models politics accurately when you're dealing with a singular issue, or two massive tribal groups.

"Left" was such an incredibly broad term, and it only made sense when the Christian conservative movement was a cohesive force that could effectively dominate one end of the left-right axis by themselves.
