China had very little outside intervention by European powers for most of the time that it was a thing, and still managed to only be a few centuries behind
(likely because it wasn't a bunch of fucking tribes at that point, and hadn't been a bunch of fucking tribes for over a thousand years)
and once they started trading with europeans... it only took them a few years to catch up and have trains and modern military and large trading ports etc
