Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people

Karl Marx

More detailed

The foundation of irreligious criticism is: Man makes religion, religion does not make man. Religion is, indeed, the self-consciousness and self-esteem of man who has either not yet won through to himself, or has already lost himself again. But man is no abstract being squatting outside the world. Man is the world of man – state, society. This state and this society produce religion, which is an inverted consciousness of the world, because they are an inverted world. Religion is the general theory of this world, its encyclopaedic compendium, its logic in popular form, its spiritual point d’honneur, its enthusiasm, its moral sanction, its solemn complement, and its universal basis of consolation and justification. It is the fantastic realization of the human essence since the human essence has not acquired any true reality. The struggle against religion is, therefore, indirectly the struggle against that world whose spiritual aroma is religion.

Religious suffering is, at one and the same time, the expression of real suffering and a protest against real suffering. Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people.

The abolition of religion as the illusory happiness of the people is the demand for their real happiness. To call on them to give up their illusions about their condition is to call on them to give up a condition that requires illusions. The criticism of religion is, therefore, in embryo, the criticism of that vale of tears of which religion is the halo.

Christ transcends the mundane, the abolition of the church isn't the abolition of Christ

Luther, we grant, overcame bondage out of devotion by replacing it by bondage out of conviction. He shattered faith in authority because he restored the authority of faith. He turned priests into laymen because he turned laymen into priests. He freed man from outer religiosity because he made religiosity the inner man. He freed the body from chains because he enchained the heart.

But, if Protestantism was not the true solution of the problem, it was at least the true setting of it. It was no longer a case of the layman’s struggle against the priest outside himself but of his struggle against his own priest inside himself, his priestly nature. And if the Protestant transformation of the German layman into priests emancipated the lay popes, the princes, with the whole of their priestly clique, the privileged and philistines, the philosophical transformation of priestly Germans into men will emancipate the people. But, secularization will not stop at the confiscation of church estates set in motion mainly by hypocritical Prussia any more than emancipation stops at princes. The Peasant War, the most radical fact of German history, came to grief because of theology. Today, when theology itself has come to grief, the most unfree fact of German history, our status quo, will be shattered against philosophy. On the eve of the Reformation, official Germany was the most unconditional slave of Rome. On the eve of its revolution, it is the unconditional slave of less than Rome, of Prussia and Austria, of country junkers and philistines.

I went more on the side of Nationalism when talking of Timothy McVeigh. When I don't believe it anymore, when I took off the Shackles of religion, at the same time Nationalism went away with it too.
@Kyger Can you ping everyone as I can't do it. I wanna piss off some white nationalists.

On a more serious note, why I don't believe in Nationalism is the pretty much the same reason, I don't believe in Communism. I might agree with Communist ideals, but not the means or even some the ends. Other than that I sympathize, that's all.
The reason I am in the opposition to the same kind of Collectivism, that flourishes when ever you stand for a cause, the issue of collective identity take more precedence over you, or group identity.
But I want to give credit to "Ned Kelly" for hitting the hardest dent on my position, I don't think I'll ever fully recover from it.

Now the point I wished to cover is done so much better by Orwell, and it's seen even in the modern day form of Nationalism as well.
Also love the distinction Orwell makes over True Patriotism and Nationalism, which I generally don't find much on the left.
The credit goes of this info, goes to another discord user, who provided this very useful info. It didn't find myself. I am very grateful to that user.

I never could have understood the phenomena so well without it.
George Orwell is a towering intellect, towards many subjects, he will be sorely missed. Wish people had his kind of clarity and the foresight, that he had.
