The thing is that the meme "absolute equality" came from a Marx's vision of a society where wealth is distributed amongst population. He actually thought of this as both good and bad idea, since people, even when they would get the goods, would become more weak than they are right now.

However, Capitalism would inevitably lead to that, since now more and more people are working "bullshit" jobs.

Equality matters at this very point because the Bourgeoisie (the rich class who doesn't work shit) is earning more than most workers. Bourgeoisie isn't necessarily "all rich people" since proletarian can be rich and poor. If communism is based on human nature as many marxist put it, why do we need a government to tell us what to do?
