It actually looks quite nice for an early version of the helicopter

2019-04-07 10:48:22 UTC

But the German helicopters looked cooler (Fa223)

I'd say it looks like a helicopter designed by someone that's only designed normal airplanes before.

2019-04-07 15:16:59 UTC

Advanced materials hadn't been developed yet, so I guess they were still working with technology and building practices of the era.

2019-04-07 15:17:45 UTC

But anyways, *how the fuck did I not know there were helicopters in WW2??*

2019-04-07 15:41:16 UTC

They were barely a thing. The German ones were, if I remember right, used in one or two special ops type situations, and I think the Japanese had some prototypes that were never deployed.

2019-04-07 15:42:51 UTC

And for the the one in that video, I *think* was basically entirely seach and rescure sort of stuff and only got deployed in I think 44.

2019-04-07 15:43:06 UTC

Interesting

2019-04-07 15:43:30 UTC

Properly combat oriented models didn't come until later.

2019-04-07 15:47:14 UTC

Of course

2019-04-07 15:48:16 UTC

I kept thinking that the first helicopters used in combat or for MEDEVAC were in Korea

2019-04-07 15:49:43 UTC

Yeah, the difference is actual usage vs. wide scale usage as a combat doctrine.

2019-04-07 15:50:04 UTC

They were still basically expensive toys and occasionally useful tools in 44/45.

2019-04-07 19:33:47 UTC

thats a cool looking helicopter
