And was when rifled muzzleloaders became common infantry guns, and not just for skirmishers/light infantry

I've always found it easier loading in a smooth bore vs. Rifled muzzleloaders...btw

Also rifling was expensive until machining got good enough

The reason the brits did not have rifles, is because they were more difficult to manufacture in bulk, and had to be issued uniformly.

Americans prided their guns like they do trucks these days. They were a status symbol that were heavily invested in and custom made to order
