the most desperate thing I ever did though was meticulously scrape the crystals or whatever of off a bunch of stems for a hit

I think I ate edibles a couple times in high school but they weren't that potent. I would honestly be terrified to take them now, I get way too paranoid which is why I don't smoke anymore. Edibles would probably send me spiraling out of control
