I see the operational cost going down as methods become cheaper and more designs are implemented.
People have this weird need to use electricity when it's not sunny outside.
Same when it's not windy.

Well you're going at this as if only one type of alternative is used on the grid.
Batteries are abysmally inefficient for storing excess energy.
The most toxic part of the solar plant is the battery
Best solution I saw for storing energy was literally pumping water back up into a dam.
My point is that there will be more available options for energy alternatives in the future.
Provided that they can live up to the current energy needs of most modern nation states, I would see the game change in the middle east for sure.
Or building chambers inside lakes, then pump the water out, to let it flow in through turbines.
Dams require maintenance as well.
Everything needs, but the difference is orders of magnitude.

It also has a footprint on the down-stream environment, based on how and where the dam is built.
The local government spends a ton of money to ensure the dams are safe.
