yes

2018-05-22 11:14:00 UTC

Israeli citizenship is contingent on IDF service, unless you have an out if I recall correctly.

2018-05-22 11:14:18 UTC

By having or faking some sort of ailment or other condition

2018-05-22 11:14:27 UTC

In Austria it is about health. I had to go despite having asthma. asshats.

2018-05-22 11:14:49 UTC

Were you infantry, @Deleted User?

2018-05-22 11:14:50 UTC

A lot of people try to fake mental health issues, it seems to be the common route for dodging

2018-05-22 11:14:57 UTC

Switzerland has it too.

2018-05-22 11:15:09 UTC

I'm unwilling to speak about my service

2018-05-22 11:15:12 UTC

Sorry

2018-05-22 11:15:26 UTC

Haha. Corporal Klinger anyone?

2018-05-22 11:15:37 UTC

@Deleted User wow really?

2018-05-22 11:15:58 UTC

what ,really?

2018-05-22 11:16:10 UTC

the drafted you even though you had asthma

2018-05-22 11:16:37 UTC

Oh fair enough @Deleted User. I did want to say that I really enjoy the design of the Merkava tank. It has its own prayer cloth!

2018-05-22 11:16:52 UTC

I am not going into army.

2018-05-22 11:17:13 UTC

You can choose between army and community service.

2018-05-22 11:18:03 UTC

Conscientious objector?

2018-05-22 11:18:23 UTC

I call Merkava reverse tardis

2018-05-22 11:18:25 UTC

all tanks really

2018-05-22 11:18:33 UTC

they look huge on the outside but they are very small on the inside

2018-05-22 11:21:09 UTC

Heh. Well they are mostly armor, engine, & weapon. If they could do without crew that might be preferred by the high command.

2018-05-22 11:21:27 UTC

It looks like a normal tank.

2018-05-22 11:21:56 UTC

Still. Can pack quite a few lads in a Merkava compared to an Abrams.

2018-05-22 11:24:40 UTC

@Deleted User it has some novel features.

2018-05-22 11:24:52 UTC

ok.

2018-05-22 11:27:01 UTC

For instance, it doubles as an APC & the afore mentioned prayer cloth, which is actually a passive missile defense for the turret bearing.

2018-05-22 11:27:21 UTC

@Deleted User A lot of non Jewish Israelis get conscripted. And anyone who wants to avoid it can. Even wants to leave while you're in service, it might be completed but they will eventually let you go

2018-05-22 11:27:32 UTC

huh

2018-05-22 11:31:09 UTC

I think now it's only like 50% of Israeli citizens actually serving. But it's a much higher percentage if you only include secular Jews

2018-05-22 11:35:02 UTC

I don't know if the IDF would accept me. The US Navy didn't. Albeit I had to tell them about a drug I was prescribed in high school to make them defer my enlisting.

2018-05-22 11:35:18 UTC

I'm overweight now.

2018-05-22 11:47:30 UTC

@Jero-Kun I doubt they'd turn you down

2018-05-22 11:47:45 UTC

There's tons of fat people in the IDF

2018-05-22 11:48:18 UTC

The IDF is about conscripting as many people as they can

2018-05-22 11:48:40 UTC

They're like all government facilities, always looking to expand

2018-05-22 11:49:53 UTC

the us military is way more selective

2018-05-22 11:51:06 UTC

It's probably easier to keep the military on a leash when you're not under existential threat

2018-05-22 11:51:14 UTC

Mmm.

2018-05-22 11:52:08 UTC

I mean. I'd probably lose the spare tire if I did PT every day & ran on rations.

2018-05-22 11:52:43 UTC

I really need to switch to bicycling to the train station rather than driving my electric car to work.
