I think they will win out in the end, social democratic policies tend to become very popular as populations become more urbanised and the USA is urbanising quite quickly

If it does, the US will balkanize *very* quickly

In fact you can almost predict much of someone politics based on whether or not they live in a city

Not surprising, I've seen arguments ranging from the USA being composed of 11 distinct cultural nations to a group of competing ideologies and peoples with distinct desires regarding the future of the union that are directly contradictory

That will lead to balkanisation
