There used to be communism in small villages, and it was the only environment where communism worked. Because everyone in a small village knew each other, so they could engage in 'gift giving', but this wouldn't work with strangers. Strangers had to barter or exchange money, due to lack of trust. The advent of agriculture meant that small villages were outnumbered by larger barter-based societies, and would have to pay tribute to survive. So, basically, imperialism undid communism, but imperialism is inevitable like entropy, given that every human society has engaged in it. Communism became impossible once agriculture was invented.
