I lived in Canada for a while when I was a kid, so I speak very good French. When I was in high school and had to take a foreign language my parents explicitly told me not to take French for an easy A since I already knew it. Signed up for French anyway. Dad found out. Was mad. Enrolled me in Chinese and Japanese. Actually really enjoyed both.

My Japanese is better than my Chinese, my current job is teaching Japanese people who work at a Japanese company here how to speak English.

They work here for a few years and then leave so I don’t feel morally perturbed by it- I wouldn’t be comfortable teaching immigrants English though.
