I don't believe Trump was for open free trade at all. Considering what e did with the economy and the huge tariffs placed on China shows he was not for open free trade, at least in respect to China. That's what differentiates a protectionist from a free trader. Protectionists use tariffs and other restrictions during global trade to keep track of each party's interests and check for a consistency. If there is conflict, one of the trader's respnsibility is to look out for the interests of the nation's worker's interests in economic growth. All those other factors you mention is precisely because open free trade was a thing. They are a problem. When you enable open free trade, you get the global involvement that is messing up America and even some European nations.
