Found next to the USS Lexington. This emblem of Felix the cat was designed by my Great grandmother. I knew she was an artist but didn’t know she supplied the USN with emblems

The plane is an F4F- Wildcat

2020-08-01 23:42:56 UTC

@Peris_Arts That's four jap planes and a bomb strike. That thing did a bit

2020-08-02 00:07:20 UTC

Yep

2020-08-02 00:07:33 UTC

Although I don’t know who piloted this aircraft

2020-08-02 00:08:33 UTC

Also considering the wildcat was completely outmatched by the zero this pilot was doing mad tricks to out maneuver those zeros @ACE

2020-08-02 01:55:52 UTC

I've seen Mustangs with 20+ aerial kills

> Also considering the wildcat was completely outmatched by the zero this pilot was doing mad tricks to out maneuver those zeros
@Peris_Arts And then the Hellcat came..

2020-08-02 02:07:27 UTC

I’m well aware of the F6F- Hellcat my Great Grandfather was a pilot of one. All you have to do is scroll up to see his final picture

2020-08-02 02:15:15 UTC

I've been on board CV-12, seen your great grandfather's ship. It's been 12 years or so, but they had some old crew working the museum, including a couple of pilots. Lots of respect for guys who were in naval aviation in those early days. It's hard enough now, but back then when they were busy figuring out how to actually do everything? Crazy.

2020-08-02 02:17:41 UTC

The only I never figured out is how in the world did they get a 6’2 man in a Hellcat ?

2020-08-02 02:19:15 UTC

😂 Very carefully? I've heard American planes were a bit more generous in the cockpit size (phrasing!) than other nations', so there's that. At least he didn't end up in the Army - they'd have stuck him in a tank!

2020-08-02 02:22:35 UTC

His ending was a rather sad one. He was shot down only a couple months before the war ended and never got to meet his son who was born the day of the first atomic bomb drop. His son never got to feel the affection of his father. Only knowing of him through stories from his mother and his fathers wing man ( Hellcat #41 )

2020-08-02 02:30:14 UTC

I've had the opportunity to see a real Hellcat in person. They're big.

@Sage Well the Army actually had the Army Air Corps back then (before it became the Air Force). Just in case you didn't know that.

2020-08-02 02:33:19 UTC

No, I knew. They just seemed to have a penchant for putting people into jobs that didn't really suit them.

2020-08-02 02:33:40 UTC

Yeah.
